Check out this classic candy counter: Charleston Chew, Abba-Zaba, Big Hunk, Look, Pop Rocks, Fun Dip. I didn't know they even made some of this stuff anymore. So in what unlikely location did I spot this? Answer later this week or as soon as someone gets it in the comments.
UPDATE: Congrats to Regular Chumpington who managed to figure out the answer solely through visual clues in the photo. You'll find his answer in the comments.
No Mallo Cups??
ReplyDeleteThere actually used to be a nostalgia candy shop in LA that had all kinds of old and regional candies. I can't remember if they had mallo cups or not, but it was fun. I think it's gone though.
ReplyDeleteMichael's weirdly has a nice retro candy section.
ReplyDeleteHey sku, I love your blog and lawhiskeysociety as well. Have you checked out www.conossr.com ? Its like facebook/twitter for whisk(e)y lovers.
ReplyDeleteWere it not for the shelf talker that clearly indicates a price of a dollar, I would have guessed the 99 cent store, which tends to have a shocking selection of candy.
ReplyDeleteThen again, theirs isn't classic as much as it tends to be remaindered and weird stuff (Nerds Rope).
There's a soda place up in Burbank that has a pretty great selection of candy as well.
So, not 99c and unexpected... I don't know, I'll throw three at you based on the typeface used:
Old Navy
Urban Outfitters
Target
RC, you got those from the typeface? What are you, a forensic font expert of some kind?
ReplyDeleteAnyway, one of your three is it.
Type is a huge part of corporate identity. Helps us identify and know that something is consistent (or not) with the "voice" of the brand. Then again, I am a design guy from time to time, so...
ReplyDeleteI'll put it on the line and guess:
- It seems too lighthearted and unironic to be Urban. I would expect a little more distressed treatment and perhaps less bright colors.
- Part of me wants to say Target. But I think they use bullseyes near the prices as a rule and I would also expect to see some red on this display. Plus it wouldn't strike me as totally unlikely of the three. which leads me to guess...
- OLD NAVY because it's bright (consistent with always-peppy ON), uses an ON blue on the side of the display, and I sure wouldn't expect to see candy at Old Navy. But, they've got those displays near the registers which usually are the ultimate in random.
So: Old Navy is my guess of the three.
Good sleuthing RC! Count me as impressed. Yes, it was indeed an Old Navy (the Beverly Connection location) that housed this interesting candy selection.
