Craft Whiskey Week

I've been pretty critical of craft whiskeys in the past, but there is no denying that this trend is still on the upswing. My Complete List of American Whiskey Distilleries, which I update almost weekly, shows nearly 150 craft distilleries making whiskey.

This week, I'll spend some time with craft distillers, tasing a variety of whiskeys from all over the country. These will be craft distilled whiskeys only, not sourced whiskey from larger distilleries, and none of it will be white whiskey, which I don't have much use for.

I'm not expecting much, but maybe something will surprise me.

Oh, and if you have a favorite craft whiskey. Let me know what it is.

The two craft whiskeys I've really enjoyed have been from Clear Creek (McCarthy's Single Malt) and House Spirits (they put out a 4-5 YO single malt whiskey, this was before the Slabtown, which had younger stuff in it).

NP, that's one of the ones I'll be posting on.

Jordan, I should really retaste McCarthy's. I haven't had it since it first came onto the market, and I don't think I've ever had House Spirits.

I've enjoyed McKenzie Bourbon from Finger Lakes Distillery.

Have enjoyed the Baby Blue from Balcones and would be curious to hear your thoughts about that one and the other whiskies now in their lineup like the cask strength True Blue, Brimstone and their single malt.

St George Single Malt is a staple in my cabinet. Lot 10 is superb. They raised the proof and the price with Lot 11. I remember you mentioning you haven't tried it in a few years, I warmly recommend it! I second Jordan on McCarthy's. FEW Spirits is very good, but still young. Edgefield Distillery in Portland makes a great aged rye, called Devils Bit (sic) ,but it's very hard to get. Looking forward to the reviews, Sku!

I really like the Leopold American small batch. It doesn't pretend to be anything it's not; it's unique and good on its own terms.

sku, thanks for being the most frequent poster of any of the whiskey blogs I read regularly. My thought is that they all need at least one posting per week to remain relevant. Most don't, and you're crushing that, which definitely causes more hits just out of curiosity!

Thanks Sam. Blogging is harder than it looks, and we all have our good and bad weeks.

No doubt harder than it looks, and the pay sucks!
