Best Whiskey Review Ever

Last week in my post about Zachory Boone's silly label, I dropped a link to a video review by a guy on YouTube.  The review got a huge response, so I thought it was worth posting on its own.  Find ten minutes and watch this thing.  It's comedy gold.

I started to list some of my favorite quotes, but it pretty much became a transcription of the entire video, so just watch it.  If you have any favorite quotes, leave them in the comments.

And don't miss Tactical's reviews of other quality products like this shocking revelation that Charles Shaw Merlot isn't very good.

Sku, this is too easy - let the man be.

I applaud Florin's compassion, but share your epicurean enjoyment of the review. I was so deeply moved. From the freezer and fridge, to the instant conjunction of tasting notes "smooth like water" and "has a LOT of character"...It's just too good to ignore...

...and THAT's why I don't do video tasting notes anymore!

Seriously, though, this guy has gone to at least as much trouble to get his views out here as me or any of the other who are making blog comments (though not as much as actual bloggers such as yourself). And while I certainly agree that there is some room for improvement in his presentation skills, his enthusiasm alone will cause me (and several others here, I betcha) to shell out eight bucks to try a bourbon we otherwise never would have. There are some pretty highly-paid touts, uh... consultants who have been less successful!

If we keep this up, the next time we see him might be the Colbert Report!

I like the comment by Harry Rock: "A 4 year old can do a better review of a can of piss." I definitely laughed more at that line than at the video itself.

Is it really all that rare to find a published piece that displays such lack of talent? In these days of internet, I don't necessarily think so. I don't make a habit out of watching bad reviews, so for all I know, this may be the worst ever recorded. Still, he clearly means well...

This guy's review of Pappy 15:

"All I'm experiencing is the pure taste of the bourbon. I've never had bourbon before."

There are so many aspects of this guy's reviews that I love. Foremost is that he appears to be quite drunk during most of them. Thing is, intentionally or not this review made my afternoon -- so I hope he keeps them coming.

i think my favourite thing about this maybe the burp at the 1:31 mark.

That Pappy 15 review makes me sick. Those are the guys that end up with bottles?!?! Wow. Criminal. "I've never had bourbon before"?? Mix it with some Coke redneck, it'll go great with your weed.

While it js comical, at least the guy reviewing Zachary Boone is trying. Might need to try some more stuff, maybe go to a tasting before he calls it "one of my best drinks." Maybe read some reviews of other whiskeys? What does "run through a wall" mean with regard to the aging of bourbon? Alright, that's enough for me. Watch out for those square looking bottles Sku, don't really see much of those...

Okay, the real review starts at 6:39. Watch that part.

(On the Pappy 15 review) This ass hat is exact type of noob that Chuck Cowdery is referring to when he talks about losers who listen to the "experts" on what to drink. They then buy pappy van winkle because they read a few web sites, and think they are experts. Its all about "avoiding any heavy lifting on the way to connoisseurship". Witness, fellow whiskey lovers, why we cant get any of this stuff.

I'd rather have a novice buy a bottle of Pappy and mix it with Coke than have an enthusiast buy a case and stick it in their basement...I believe that's the real reason you can't find the stuff.

This is true Sku. Went to a distillery last week in KY that shall remain unnamed and the girl working in the gift shoppe told me the master distiller had 3 cases of Pappy 20. And this wasn't Buffalo Trace. Wow. That's quite a bit.

I don't know. While people are definitely hoarding the Pappys, in some way that would be the best of available options because eventually if you have 3 cases of Pappys 20 you will start buying something else, freeing up the market. I suspect that Pappys has simply become a status symbol amongst certain groups (Lawyers, executive types, etc) who don't really like whisky so much as they like to be seen having the best whisky. I think you see this occasionally with other whisky (I'm thinking Macallan 18, which has skyrocketed in price in the last 10 years). This is the worst option because it means that as long as Bourdain keeps pimping pappys on his show, it will remain the best, and guys who have no qualms about slipping the clerk a couple hundred dollars to put some aside will get all the pappys.

Never seases to amaze me how people will spend 5 or 600 dollars on a bottle at Bonhams or on Craiglist when there are a few bottles to be had here and there if you do some groundwork and have some luck. I think some people almost WANT to spend ridiculous amounts on a bottle. Gives them even more to brag about.

I'm content to drink my Weller 12 and Elmer T. Lee and be happy. The market will decide. I suspect only those sitting on S-W juice will see any real appreciation long term. As the wise Jason sez, "drink your bourbon."
