New Whiskey Labels: Diageo Orphan Barrels, Japanese Whisky and More

This week's most interesting new labels from the federal TTB database:

Diageo cleared a label for the newest release in its Orphan Barrel series:  Lost Prophet, a 22 year old Kentucky bourbon. This one released over the weekend and has since been written up by Whisky Advocate who notes it was distilled at Buffalo Trace unlike the previous Orphan Barrels which were distilled at Bernheim.

Springbank cleared a label for Springbank Green, a 12 year old.

It looks like we might be getting a new Japanese whisky.  This week labels cleared for Iwai and Iwai Tradition from the Shinshu Mars Distillery on the southern Japanese island of Kyushu.

Note:  The fact that a label appears on the TTB database does not necessarily mean it will be produced.  In addition, some details on the label, such as proof, can change in the final product.

I love the slogan on the Prophet's front label: "Bottled with pride in Tullahoma." Between Bulleit and now this, Diageo sure is proud of their exclusive and proprietary "barrel-to-glass" process.

What's the deal with that Springbank "Green"?

I tried to google it a bit but it's hard to find good info; most search results are about an old "green thistle" bottle.

Andrew, that's a great line!

Anon, I think it's a new label. I've never heard of it before.

Apparently "green" is made with organic barley according to Reuben at WhiskyNotes:

Looks like Springbank Green is going to be 100% bourbon barrel aged. Very excited to give that a try!

Good link, Alex. Thanks.

100% bourbon barrel aged—great! I haven't had a ton of Springbanks, but the ones I've had always leave me wishing they had zero sherry.

I hope the organic hoopla doesn't make it too expensive.

So...whatever happened to "Strongbox?" I thought that was meant to be the next Orphan Barrel release?
